Interior with minor signs of wear.; Catalogue from an exhibition held at Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga from 14 June to 25 September 2022.; Beyond the basic activities of subsistence, artistic expression and games are perhaps the most decisive human endeavours in the process of civilisational evolution. The game, a focus of anthropological study, which rightly highlights its social function, being dissociated from material interests or objective utility, became essential to applied mathematics and, from there, through the theory of games, later extended to the most diverse disciplinary fields, from economy, biology and physics to political science and computing. The human being's vocation as a homo ludens is thus ancient, immemorial, with a history still to be written, but with East Asia as one of its mythical birthplaces. The first globalisation, which the Portuguese initiated in the 15th century, bringing the known continents into closer contact, was responsible for unprecedented commercial exchange at the same time as making possible an intensive circulation of culture between East and West. Therefore, we talk about crossing games, referring to those that went, those that came, and all the cultural exchanges to which they gave rise. But games are not just luxury products, artworks and fine craftsmanship, made of noble and rare materials. Games also allowed for the assimilation of forms of rationality and cultural expression, opportunities for socialising and contact, which we felt were worth exploring and bringing to light in this exhibition, in truth a rather unusual and, among us, almost unprecedented." excerpt from the introductory text by Joao Carlos Santos, Director-General for Cultural Heritage.; "Mainly sourced from private collections, this exhibition is a unique opportunity to get to know and enjoy a group of objects that are rarely accessible, the quality of which is immediately perceptible in the diversified interpretation of the codified forms of each game. Bringing it to the public would not have been possible without the generosity of those who loaned pieces, institutions but mainly private collectors - Ana and António Horta Osório, Jorge Welsh, Teresa Paramés." excerpt by the introductory text by Joaquim Oliveira Caetano, Director of the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga.
