En 1964, siendo estudiante de la Universidad Austral de Valdivia, fundó y dirigió el Grupo Trilce de Poesía y la Revista de Poesía Trilce, publicación que, en su Tercera Época, se edita actualmente en Concepción, siempre bajo la dire…cción de Lara. Además de su obra de creación literaria -que comprende una veintena de libros, entre ellos Los Buenos Días, Memoria, Vida Probable, Fuego de Mayo, Voces de Portocaliu, La Nueva Frontera, Delta-, Omar Lara es traductor del rumano, labor que ejerció a partir de su exilio en Bucarest, entre 1974 y 1981 (exilio que lo llevó antes a Lima y luego a Madrid). Editoriales rumanas, españolas, chilenas y peruanas han publicado varias de sus traducciones. Ganó el Premio Casa de las Américas por su libro Oh Buenas Maneras (La Habana, 1975), la Beca de Creación John Guggenhim (1983), la Medalla Mihai Eminescu, que concede el Gobierno de Rumanía (2001), la Medalla Presidencial Centenario Pablo Neruda (2004), el Premio Municipal de Extensión Cultural (Valdivia, 1972), El Premio Municipal de Arte (Concepción, 1992), el Premio Regional de Artes Literarias Baldomero Lillo (Concepción, 2004). En su calidad de director de la Revista Trilce, recibió el Premio de la Sociedad de Escritores de Chile 2006, que conceden los ex presidentes de la entidad. En 2007 ha sido distinguido con el Premio Nacional de Poesía Americana (Madrid) 95 gr. No aplica (illustrator). Libro.
