Auftraggeber war die U.S. Atomic Energy Commission: Vertrag: AT 11 1 GEN 14. Archiviert als Report Number: WAPD TM 141 (auch klassifiziert unter UC 25; TID 4500, 14th ed.). Datum: September 1958. Der Bericht dokumentiert eine systematische Reihe von Untersuchungen zur Beizbehandlung von Zircaloy 2 und Zircaloy 4, bevor diese in Korrosionstests eingesetzt wurden. Die Autoren analysierten dabei: zunächst die Anwendung von Salpetersäure- Flussäure-Beizlösungen, d.h. die Variation von Additiven zur Optimierung von Beizrate, Oberflächenglätte, Spülverhalten und den Einfluss auf eine spätere Korrosion; dann die Neutralisation durch gemeinsame Ionen & Spülungen mit Schwefelsäure und dabei die Prüfung, ob diese Nachbehandlungen Säureeinschlüsse reduzieren und die Oberflächenreinigung verbessern; im nächsten Schritt verglichen sie verschiedene Ätzlösungen: u.?a. HCl-HF Gemische sowie HNO?-H?SO?-HF Systeme. Bei alledem war das Ziel: die Minimierung von Säureentrapment, die Verbesserung der Reproduzierbarkeit von Korrosionstests und die Kontrolle der Oberflächenchemie. Damit war der Bericht typisch für die damalige reaktororientierte Werkstoffforschung, in der die Oberflächenvorbehandlung von Zircaloy eine entscheidende Rolle für Korrosionsverhalten, Hydridbildung und Lebensdauer von Brennelementhüllen spielte. Mit diesem Erkenntnisinteresse' markierte der Bericht von 1958 die Schnittstelle zwischen der frühen Reaktorwerkstoffkunde und der Konsolidierung von Zircaloy als strategischem Hüllrohrwerkstoff. Die dokumentierten Beiz Experimente waren die Antwort auf ein Kernproblem der 1950er Jahre: die Kontrolle der Oberflächenchemie als Voraussetzung für reproduzierbare Korrosionsdaten. Die 1950er waren das Jahrzehnt, in dem Zircaloy 2 und Zircaloy 4 als Standardwerkstoffe für Brennelementhüllrohre etabliert wurden. Die Gründe: niedriger thermischer Neutroneneinfang - entscheidend für Reaktoren der AEC und Navy; Hohe Korrosionsbeständigkeit in Hochtemperaturwasser und Dampf; mechanische Stabilität unter Druck, Temperatur und Neutronenfluss. Dabei wurd schnell klar: die Korrosionsleistung hing von der Oberflächenbeschaffenheit ab. Schon kleinste Variationen in Oxidresten, Schmiermitteln, Walzhaut oder Säurerückständen führten zu stark divergierenden Testergebnissen. Genau hier setzte der Bericht an. Die Bettis Gruppe (Kass, Fontanese, Oaks, Scott) untersuchte 1958 systematisch: HNO?-HF Beizen als Standardverfahren, HCl-HF Varianten, Nachbehandlungen wie common ion neutralization und H?SO? Rinses, Additive zur Steuerung von Beizrate, Oberflächenglätte und Spülverhalten. Das Ziel: Reproduzierbarkeit. Ohne kontrollierte Oberflächenvorbehandlung waren Korrosionstests zwischen Laboren nicht vergleichbar. Die AEC verlangte jedoch belastbare Daten für Reaktordesigns, Lebensdauerabschätzungen und Sicherheitsmargen. Der Bericht war somit kein isoliertes Laborprojekt, sondern Teil eines AEC weiten Standardisierungsprogramms, das später in ASTM Normen und internationalen Zircaloy Konferenzen (z.?B. ASTM STP Reihen) mündete. Der Bericht war mit alledem ein Schritt zu drei entscheidenden Entwicklungen: (1) die Konsolidierung der Zircaloy Oberflächenchemie (Daten zu: Beizkinetik, Oberflächenmorphologie, Säureeinschlüssen, Einfluss auf Korrosionswachstum); (2) die Vorbereitung der großen Korrosionsprogramme der 1960er (Die späteren, vielzitierten Arbeiten (z.?B. DeCrescente/Santoro 1960) bauen direkt auf den hier getesteten HNO?-HF Systemen auf. OSTI bestätigt die enge thematische Linie); (3) der Übergang von "Werkstoffkunde" zu "Reaktorwerkstoffwissenschaft" (Die 1950er markierten den Moment, in dem Zircaloy nicht mehr nur metallurgisch, sondern reaktorphysikalisch gedacht wurde: Korrosion ? Hydridbildung ? Versprödung ? Lebensdauer ? Sicherheitsmargen). Bei dieser Entwicklung war die Kontrolle der Oberfläche die Voraussetzung. Mit alledem ist das vorliegende Buch für Sammler, Historiker und Werkstoffkundler ein Fundstück: es dokumentiert ein frühes, vollständiges Prozessfenster, es macht die Standardisierung der Beizpraxis sichtbar, es spiegelt die Regelungs-Strategie der AEC und markiert die Geburtsphase der modernen Zircaloy Korrosionsforschung, Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 600.
