Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Inscribed in the year of publication to the ffep by Seamus O'Sullivan "To Mary Lavin from Seamus O'Sullivan with best wishes for 1945". Quarter cloth & paper covered pale green boards.Very Good plus in the like d/w. First Edition, first printing. Pri…nted at the Dublin University Press. Erratum slip tipped in. Seumas O'Sullivan was the editor of The Dublin Magazine, and Mary Lavin published her very first story, "Miss Holland," there in April 1939. O'Sullivan praised it as "a finished piece of work" whose "delicate restraint appealed greatly," and told her he would be glad to consider anything further she submitted. O'Sullivan was keen to encourage talented young Irish writers, and the relationship extended over many years. By March 1954, Lavin was writing to him as her "favourite editor" telling him she hoped her next volume would gain "a little lustre by an acknowledgement to The Dublin Magazine." The Dublin Magazine (which O'Sullivan edited from 1923 until his death in 1958) was a crucial venue for Irish literary talent of that era, and his championing of Lavin in 1939 came at an early and formative stage of her career, just as she was abandoning her PhD on Virginia Woolf in favour of fiction. The Mary Lavin papers at Binghamton University include correspondence to Lavin from Seumas O'Sullivan , confirming a personal relationship that went beyond formal editorial exchanges. We have not discovered any auction records of books inscribed by O'Sullivan to Lavin. A scarce association copy of a publication which is scarce in its own right. Inscribed by Author(s).
