Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First American Edition. New York: Casserly & Sons, 1843. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition of the Great Liberator's history of Ireland. In a perhaps vain attempt to ward of the plagiarizers of America, there is a statement by O'Connell that authorizes Casserly as the "sole…publishers." Although it is titled "Volume One 1172-1660," O'Connell's book had no subsequent volumes issued (perhaps he was too hard at work on Irish independence to take the time!). Full leather binding, worn and with splits at the spine, but still holding nicely. Three gilt bands are still visible but the spine label has been rubbed off. The text is clean and unmarked, still bright and readable, but is rather well foxed throughout. A decent example of an important Irish work. In an archival plastic protector. . First American Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Third Edition. Dublin: James Duffy, 1869. O'Connell, known as "The Liberator" was the most prominent figure for Irish nationalism and Roman Catholic emancipation in the mid-Nineteenth Century. First published in 1844, the same year O'Connell was released from a prison term. Per COPAC,…this is a Very Good copy of the Third Edition. A rare book. Green cloth binding, decoratively blindstamped on the covers; titling in gilt on the spine. Clean text; 256 pages. Very bright and clear; about one-half of the textblock remains unopened. O'Connell's Preface is dated 1843 and in a bit of historical irony, his Dedication is to the Queen of England. This book has a unique feature. The front cover has been darkened and "customized" by colouring an image of the flag of the Irish Republic over the stamping. Presumably this was done by an Irish patriot, but when is in doubt. The tricolour was officially adopted after Irish independence, so Quercus can offer that the artwork was done sometime after that [perhaps 1920 on?]. Whatever the truth of the matter, this is an exceptional book. In an archival plastic protector. Third Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
