Ce volume scientifique est destiné tant à un large public féru d'histoire qu'aux chercheurs. Il propose une étude systématique de la présence des comtes de Habsbourg en Alsace avant 1273. Inscrivant le sujet dans une perspective politique débutant au Haut Moyen-Age, l'auteur dépasse largement les frontières géographiques de l'Alsace pour s'intéresser à la région du Rhin supérieur dans son ensemble (Brisgau, Ortenau, Suisse alémanique centrale et orientale, Rhétie). L'ouvrage est organisé sous forme de regestes. Ce genre historique particulier consiste à ranger en une suite chronologique, qui se veut exhaustive, des notices présentant les informations puisées à diverses sources (actes diplomatiques, chroniques, annales, etc.) relatives à un personnage, à une chancellerie ou à un lignage donné dans un cadre spatial et temporel déterminé - en l'occurrence les comtes de Habsbourg en Alsace avant 1273. Chaque regeste est constitué d'une analyse suivie d'un appareil critique pourvu de renvois archivistiques et bibliographiques détaillés. De nombreux commentaires complètent ou éclaircissent certaines des questions soulevées.
