Hardback. Condition: New. From Thomas Hamilton to contemporary artists Tom Normand traces the 200 year history of the Royal Scottish Academy. Featuring both men and women, short summaries precede each reproduction and orient the reader to particular points of interest within each art work. The artist's history is related side by… side with that of the Academy and, as such, they complement descriptions of the paintings. The book chronologically captures different periods as they influenced the style of what was produced in the Academy. Looking forward Normand states that 'the Academy, in its history, has been a vital part of that international role, freely exhibiting the newest and the best of modern art and respecting the multi-dimensional approaches of contemporary art'. It is this vitality in the Scottish art scene that will sustain its visual culture in the future and place it on the international stage.

Paperback. Condition: New. Calum Colvin is one of Scotland's most innovative and exciting contemporary photographers. In his work he creates a kaleidoscope of figures, symbols and ideas, which are blended into the most vibrant and stimulating images. With this project, Colvin has explored the mysterious world of Ossian. Ossian,…a third century Celtic bard, was first discovered by James MacPherson, himself a poet but also a cultural entrepreneur and an adventurer. MacPherson published the ballads of Ossian in the years after 1760. These mournful elegies to the lost world of the Gael became a cause celebre in Enlightenment society. On the one hand, MacPherson was hailed as the discoverer and translator of a "Celtic Homer", while on the other, he was accused by Samuel Johnson, of having perpetrated a cruel fraud on the public. While this dispute rumbled on, the poems of Ossian became feted throughout Europe and America and touched the art of poets, writers and composers such as Burns, Goethe, Longfellow and Mendelssohn. Colvin has taken these events as the basis for his surreal meditation on contemporary culture. Through the ideas and associations inspired by MacPherson's Ossian, he has produced a discourse on national identity, "authenticity" and the human psyche. It is characteristic of Colvin that he has successfully explored these difficult themes while simultaneously creating accessible, provocative photographs.

Hardback. Condition: New. This book is a celebration of the extraordinary variety of Calum Colvin's work from the past four decades. Tom Normand comprehensively explores the artist's collection, selecting core subjects and ideas, examining diverse tropes and genres, and reviewing topics and issues. Each chapter is supported by v…isual examples of Colvin's work to create a rich narrative that recognises the ways in which thoughts, motifs and ideas surface in Colvin's photography and form a mosaic of associations and perceptions.
