Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Norman Rockwell (illustrator). 1st Edition. This oversized volume is fully illustrated, and the gatefolds are intact. The flaw is at the top of the spine, where the top edge is gouged, or maybe chewed by baby or pet. 1/2" flaw does not affect the titling on the spine, but the cardboard binding does break the red covers at that spot. The jacket is torn at that spot, but I've added inside scotch tape 2" to make it more presentable. Still, a decent reference copy. About 13" tall, 10" across, and half an inch deep. Photos on request.

Drawing on extensive experience, particularly in the wake of the First World War, the text covers preoperative preparation, specific operative methods for various sites of the body, and the vital importance of postoperative care. The book places significant emphasis on the functional outcome for the patient, discussing not only the surgical act itself but also the preparation of the stump for prosthetic fitting. With detailed observations on flap construction, nerve treatment, and bone management, 'Amputations' provides a detailed window into the surgical standards of the early 20th century. This work remains a significant historical resource for medical professionals, historians of science, and those interested in the evolution of orthopedic practices and rehabilitative medicine.
