Über eine Spanne, die vom Alten Testament über Vitruv bis zur Moderne reicht, trägt Rykwert ein ungemein reiches Material zusammen, das zur erstaunlichen Feststellung führt: Immer schon hat die Frage nach den Ursprüngen des Bauens offensichtlich nicht nur Bauende, sondern auch Theologen, Schriftsteller und Maler beschäftigt. Je nach Zeitgeist und Neigung sucht man Urbilder in der Natur, in Mythos und Schöpfungsgeschichte, im handwerklich oder sozial Primitiven. Rykwerts Ideengeschichte zur Urhütte ist damit auch eine Geschichte heterogenster Spekulationen, die je nach ethnologischen, historischen, ur- oder gar naturgeschichtlichen Quellen, auf die man sich bezieht, die wunderlichsten Blüten treiben (vgl. etwa die Urhütten von Laugier, Viollet-le-Duc und Hall).
