Core Concepts of the Book. Four Types of Play. Smilansky and Shefatya identify four distinct stages or types of children's play: Functional Play: Simple, repetitive muscle movements and object manipulation (like shaking a rattle or running).Constructive Play: Building, drawing, or creating objects and structures. Dramatic and Sociodramatic Play: Pretending to be roles, acting out scenarios, and cooperating with peers in make-believe play.Games with Rules: Pre-arranged rules and structure that require participants to adjust their behavior (typically emerging around age six). Elements of Sociodramatic Play. The authors emphasize sociodramatic play as a vital tool for complex thought and emotional growth. They outline six key criteria to measure quality sociodramatic play: Taking on a make-believe role. Transforming objects to represent other items.Expressing pretend actions and situations.Persistence (sustaining the play episode for 10 minutes or more).
