Zum Einen gelingt es dort erstmals, die Siedlungsentwicklung sowohl qualitativ als auch quantitativ zu beschreiben und dabei… zwischen Stadt und Umland zu unterscheiden. Die Ergebnisse, ein letzter städtischer Bauboom um 400 n. Chr. und eine Verländlichung im 5./6. Jahrhundert, lassen sich auf ganz Anatolien übertragen. Rund 500 neu vorgelegte Steinmetzarbeiten erschließen außerdem nicht nur verschiedene lokale Werkstätten, sondern auch die Produktion der zentralanatolischen Marmorbrüche von Dokimion. 1990 begann ein neuer Abschnitt der Aizanoi-Grabung mit dem Ziel, die Stadtentwicklung von den Anfängen bis zur Einbeziehung der Ruinen in das traditionelle türkische Landstädtchen Çavdarhisar zu untersuchen. Diese Untersuchungen liefern Erkenntnisse zur Erforschung des Siedlungswesens und der Kulturlandschaften im westlichen Zentralanatolien und darüber hinaus. Im Gegensatz zu anderen anatolischen Städten hat die Lage Aizanois abseits der modernen Wirtschafts- und Tourismuszentren zahlreiche antike Hinterlassenschaften bewahrt. In vielen Dörfern finden sich Architekturteile, die offensichtlich aus christlichen Bauten stammen, aber kaum Hinweise auf antike Repräsentationsarchitektur. Philipp Niewöhner analysiert jenen historischen Wandlungsprozess am Ende der Antike, indem er alle auffindbaren frühbyzantinischen Monumente der Aizanitis dokumentiert und auswertet. Er weist überzeugend nach, dass sich die Siedlungsbilder des städtischen Zentrums und der ländlichen Siedlungen im 5. und 6. Jh. angleichen. Die fortschreitende Vernachlässigung der Stadt geht mit einem Bauboom auf dem Land einher, der auf steigende Bevölkerungszahlen hinweist eine Tendenz, die ganz Anatolien im 5. und 6. Jh. prägte. Ihre Ursachen liegen im komplexen Zusammenwirken von politisch-gesellschaftlichen und ökonomischen Faktoren. Ein weiteres Ergebnis zeichnete sich erst im Lauf der Untersuchungen ab: Erstklassige Steinmetzarbeiten aus dem gleichen dokimischen Marmor, der in der Kaiserzeit für die berühmten kleinasiatischen Sarkophage verwendet wurde, belegen die fortgesetzte Produktion der Brüche und Werkstätten in Dokimion. Sie entwickelten im 4. Jh. jenes charakteristische Formenrepertoire, das in theodosianischer Zeit von den hauptstädtischen Marmorbrüchen auf Prokonnesos übernommen wurde, und blieb bis ins 6. Jh. erstklassig. Diese Entdeckungen werfen ein neues Licht auf die Entwicklung der Steinmetzkunst, insbesondere in Bezug auf das Verhältnis von Hauptstadt und Provinz. Für die weitere Erforschung des frühbyzantinischen Siedlungs- und Steinmetzwesens in Anatolien bieten die neu vorgelegten Befunde aus Aizanoi eine umfangreiche und in vieler Hinsicht repräsentative Materialbasis.
