Sospechamos que la mayoría de los educadores se dan cuenta de la fundamental importancia que tiene la capacidad de pensar y que muchos profesores ejercen una labor llena de inspiración al inculcar en sus alumnos un espíritu de indagación y razonamiento dentro del proceso docente de sus cursos de contenido convencional. A pesar de eso, es un hecho indiscutible que muchos estudiantes no adquieren la capacidad necesaria, y que hasta hace poco se ha prestado relativamente muy poca atención a la posibilidad de hacer de la enseñanza de la habilidad de pensar un objetivo educacional primario en el sentido en que lo son la enseñanza de la lectura, la escritura y las matemáticas.
