Contact seller5-star sellerTHE PERFECTION OF ENGRAVING. 8vo, 4 parts in 1 [21.5 x 13.5 cm]. With separate title-pages for each of the 4 parts, dated 1832-1833. Bound in original publisher's printed blue boards. Remains of a small, early shelf-label on spine; otherwise a marvelously fresh and unsophisticated copy. Ex-libris on pastedown of Luigi Majno (185…2-1915). First printed catalog of the complete Collezione Manfredini, a collection of 742 engravings which Federico Manfredini (1743-1829) considered 'classical' or typologically important. Manfredini's rather positivistic vision sought to elaborate "Progressi nel Perfezionamente delle Stampe', and each of four epochs is characterized with representative examples and notes by the editor Neumayr. The periods are divided as follows: 1437-1581; 1570-1680; 1630-1790; and the modern era. Neumayr, the 'custodian' of the collection following Manfredini's death, discusses its origin and purpose in his general preface found in Part I. Manfredini's earliest piece was what he considered the 'proof state' for an engraving dated by him to ca. 1437 ('The Conversion of S. Paul', ascribed by him to Maso Finiguerra); we also find 'The Temptation of St Anthony' by Martin Schoengauer, dated here to ca. 1460. his latest pieces were by the still-living Morghen Rafaello (of whom Manfredini collected some 60 different examples). The Carraccis are well-represented, as are Durer, Goltzius, Hollar, Mantegna, Masson, Parmigianino, and Raimondi. Surprisingly, there are relatively few examples of the Flemish masters like de Jode and the Galle dynasty. Alongside a description of each piece, all 168 individual artists are given a critical commentary by Neumayr. Federico Manfredini (1743-1829) was a Tuscan politician who collected both books and prints. Today, his collection of art one of the few to escape the ravages of the Napoleonic invasion is housed in the 'Pinacoteca Manfrediniana' of the Episcopal Seminary of Venice, while the engravings remain in Padua. We have traced one earlier printed 'selection' of items from the collection, published in 1808, long before the collection was completed (Neumayr's Saggio di sceltissime stampe). That earlier catalog contains much more abbreviated entries and absolutely none of the critical discourse found in the 1833 catalog. OCLC shows US copies at the Newberry, Illinois, NYPL, and the Clark Art Institute. Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition. Two parts in one volume, octavo (240 x 165 mm). 441 pages. Errata leaf at end. Contemporary Paduan red morocco, richly gilt, the arms of Padua at center of each side, a wide gilt floral border, spine gilt, black morocco lettering-piece, edges gilt. A major source, often cited, of bio-bibliographical information on… the most famous citizens of Padua, framed around an exegesis of the statues surrounding the Prato della Valle. The two parts of the book divide the exterior ring (containing 44 statues) from the interior ring (containing a further 44 statues and obelisks). The square became the property of the city of Padua in 1767, having formerly belonged to the monks of Santa Giustina. The plan to restructure the square was that of Andrea Memmo (depicted in the final statue of the exterior ring). Among the notable figures represented with a statue, and described in Neumayr's extensive biographical notes, are Popes Paul II, Eugene IV, Alexander VIII and Clement XIII. Of greatest importance are Neumayr's entries on pages 121-134 for Ludovico Ariosto; pages 153-172 for Petrarch; and pages 173-179 for Galileo. Lauro no. 680. See also item 400524 for an 1842 guide to Padua. Dried and somewhat cracked, bottom spine compartment perished, internally a fine, crisp copy.

Cenni sulle moderne stampe classiche. Epoca quarta da De Non Domenico a Morgen Raffaello di Neu-Mayr

Contact seller3-star sellerIn 8, pp. IX + (1) + 44. Br. edit.
