C'est en 1997 que, forts de l'engagement de la ville et du soutien du ministère de la Culture, Sybil Albers-Barrier et Gottfried Honegger décident de donner leur collection à l'État, à condition que la forte cohérence scientifique du projet autour de l'art abstrait, géométrique, construit et concret, soit préservée. La première donation est formalisée en 2000 ; elle est complétée par un ensemble important d' uvres personnelles de Gottfried Honegger en 2001 puis de trois autres jusqu'en 2011. En 2002, puis en 2003, Aurélie Nemours fait également don à l'État d'un ensemble de ses uvres, auquel s'ajoute une donation de Catherine et Gilbert Brownstone (2001) et de Lanfranco Bombelli Tiravanti en 2008. En 2004, le bâtiment signé par les architectes suisses Annette Gigon et Mike Guyer offre aux uvres de la Ğ Donation Albers-Honegger ğ un lieu qui transpose les enjeux de l'art concret plans et couleurs à l'échelle du réel.
