L'idea di una Francia potentissima non piaceva all'Inghilterra, che il 15 maggio 1702 dichiarò guerra alla vicina d'oltremanica, dando inizio così a quella guerra di successione spagnola che si sarebbe conclusa con i trattati di Utrecht nel 1713. Senza dubbio, perciò, i trattati di Utrecht costituiscono un punto nodale delle vicende del nostro continente, l'atto di nascita di "una pace di dimensione europea" che richiedeva di essere indagato a fondo. Ed è quel che hanno fatto alcuni storici europei, mettendone in luce gli aspetti più rilevanti grazie anche a un attento scandaglio della copiosa produzione editoriale contemporanea e delle ricchissime corrispondenze diplomatiche conservate negli archivi d'Europa.
