Contact seller5-star sellerSoft cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket Issued. 1st Edition. 1980 FIRST USA EDITION. Original large format paperback. The book has clean covers, UNDERLINING ON MANY PAGES, no tears, no foxing, solid binding. The underlining is mainly in the list of books section, the former owner probably underlining the titles in his collection. The book is still entirely functional as a working copy and it is in nice condition. The book measures 234mm tall x 184mm, and has 165 pages, 6 b/w photos, several small maps. The core of the book is a 76 page bibliography (ordered by author) that covers the literature in English from 1744 through 1978. The book includes a good 35 page subject index with general descriptive text and a list of books related to each subject, & a 37 page section listing mountains around the world (grouped geographically) with ascent history and references to the books related to each mountain or range. Books recommended for reading are marked with "*" and there is a list of the author's choice of the 50 best mountaineering books. These sections & features are not included in the 1986 revised edition which greatly increased the number of book entries at the cost of omitting the aforementioned general information features. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED.…

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. He is known as one of history's greatest Himalayan mountaineers, a man who pushed back the frontiers of the possible for a whole generation of climbers. In his revealing autobiography Reinhold Messner reflects on his remarkable career. His story is more than a recounting of "firsts." Here Messner reveals the forces and events that have shaped him as an individual and as a climber--including his brother's tragic death on Nanga Parbat in 1970. Messner takes us from the days of his first climb of the Sass Rigais in the Dolomites with his father at age 5 to his later turning away from the overcrowded Alps and 8,000 meter-peaks to find fulfillment in the remoter parts of the world and in crossing the wastes of Antarctica. In between emerges the man as famous for his disciplined approach as for his innovative spirit. Messner evolved his philosophy of the single free-climbing line with its uncompromising purity of style in the Dolomites and, as equipment and technique developed, he was in the forefront of the transference of fast lightweight alpine methods to the great ranges. "Reinhold Messner: Free Spirit" puts the career of a mountaun pioneer in full perspective. Book Designed by Trevor Spooner. Filled with maps and full color photographs. ToC plus Index. The majority of the photographs were from Messner, with permissions from 7 other photographers or organizations.
