Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the rich history of the Upper Mohawk Valley, a region shaped by the confluence of Native American, European, and American influences. Beginning with the Mohawk Indians and their unique societal structures, the author traces the arrival of German Palatine immigrants in the early 18th century, driven by religious persecution and seeking a new life. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of major historical events, including the French and Indian War and the American Revolution, highlighting the valley's strategic importance as a frontier and the challenges faced by its early inhabitants. Through meticulous research and compelling storytelling, the author sheds light on lesser-known incidents and local figures, weaving a tapestry of personal stories and broader historical forces. This book offers not just a chronicle of events but also an exploration of the complex dynamics between different cultures and the enduring impact of historical decisions, such as the controversial land confiscations from British loyalists. Ultimately, it paints a vivid portrait of a region and its people, revealing how their struggles and triumphs have contributed to the larger American narrative. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. I am pleased to offer: "A History of Herkimer County (New York) Including the Upper Mohawk Valley from the Earliest Period to the Present Time" by Nathaniel S. Benton. The sub-title goes on to state: ".With a brief notice of the Iroquois Indians, the early German tribes, the Palatine Immigrations into the Colony of New York, and biographical sketches of the Palatine Families, the Patentees of Burnetsfield in the Year 1725." Also Biographical Notices of the most Prominent Public Men of the County; with Important Statistical Information." Please see the photo of the Table of Contents for your further information. This book is bound in full calf leather with black & gilt leather title labels on the spine. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The seam between the covers and the spine was cracked and broken but this has been professionally repaired and the covers are now well attached. There has been plenty of rubbing and bumping to the leather boards including some chipping at the top of the spine. It looks rough but happily, the book is still intact (but will have to be handled with care by the new owner). Inside, the situation is much better. The pages and few plates are clean and bright, without toning or foxing. Page 496/496 is misfolded because it was miscut during binding and the page would overlap the others if not so folded. Both hinges have also been repaired with strips of marbled librarian's tape, adding to the strength of the binding. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…
