hardcover. Condition: Fine. Color illustrated hardcover. Fine (issued without dust jacket). INSCRIBED BY SUE WRIGHT AND WITH a handwritten Christmas card and hand-annotated (by Sue, the subject's wife) promotional sheet laid in. A collection of letters home from World War II Marine Corps Pfc. Nathaniel Wright. Wright was from su…burban Washington D.C (he wife called his perhaps the most miniscule inductee the Corps had ever seen) and in 1945, at age 18, boarded a bus to boot camp at Parris Island. The war ended before he saw action so he had an exciting journey through the lower 48, a Pacific Ocean voyage, weeks in Hawaii, and months in Japan getting to know the Japanese landscapes, architecture, customs and local citizens. His letters, written in journalistic style amazingly descriptive for a youth, put the best possible spin on his and his mates' experiences like nighttime guard duty, early morning K.P., a terrifying barracks fire that destroyed everything he owned, and his walks through post-bomb nagasaki. Signed.
