Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket, as Issued. 5th or later Edition. The twelfth edition of this sought-after account of Pitcairn and island life - a lovely well-preserved copy in the original publisher's green cloth binding with gilt tiles and decorations. The twelfth edition is revised with a new preface, bringing the text up to date, and has four leaves of advertisements at the back of the book. An exciting account of the island of Pitcairn, with details on island life and descriptions of the scenery. With chapters on the bounty, the murder of John Norton, accounts of the mutiny, and much more. including a historical sketch of Norfolk Island and its condition in the nineteenth century. The first edition originally appeared in 1853. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, and seventeen further full page engraved plates, one of which is a fold-out facsimile of John Adam's handwriting. Collated, complete. An excellent copy of this sought after travel work. ***For a book now 165 years old, this copy can be described as near fine, with very few discernible faults. Blind-decorated green cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles and decoration to the spine and front board. The gilt is still beautifully bright, considering the book's age. The top edge of the page block is also gilt and still clean and bright. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. No significant bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine, with clean pages - hardly any foxing and no creases or tears - just a couple of top corner tips turned. There is a contemporaneous presentation inscription, dated 1862, in fountain-pen on the yellow front free endpaper (please see scans). ***168mm x 112mm. 414 pages plus 4pp of adverts at the back of the book. ***'The first Edition of "Pitcairn; the Island, the People, and the Pastor.", appeared in the spring of 1853. Between that date and the present, about thirty thousand copies have been printed. The subject was one of a kind at once to command a large circulation of the work: and circumstances have continued to arise, in connexion with the Island, which have greatly tended to sustain the interest felt in the place and its inhabitants. The arrival of their pastor in England, his admission, whilst here, to holy orders, and his interview with the Queen and the Prince Consort, were pleasing and important occurrences, when viewed in reference to the original history of Pitcairn. Still more eventful days, however, were in store for the people. The provision made by the British Government for their transfer to Norfolk Island, and the further measures recently adopted for their benefit by Sir William Denison, the governor, have brought to our minds the progress and prospects of this remarkable community in a striking manner.' (Quote taken from the new Preface to the twelfth edition) ***'x.' (Quote taken from Wiki) ***A revised and enlarged twelfth edition of this beautiful little book, in near fine original condition. Very uncommon in this condition. Of interest to collectors of work concerning Pitcairn Island. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…

Sm. 8vo., Eleventh Edition, with engraved portrait frontispiece, 14 engraved plates and engraved chart, contemporary signatures on front endpapers; original brown diced cloth, upper board blocked in gilt and blind, backstrip blocked and lettered in gilt, primrose endpapers, expertly rebacked, a remarkably bright, clean, crisp copy in publisher's original pictorial binding. With 4pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end, and binder's ticket of Trickett & Son on rear paste-down. With a relevant postcard and cutting loosely inserted. First published in 1853, this is arguably the best mid-nineteenth century account of the aftermath of the mutiny. Its publication was stimulated by a resurrection of public interest in the BOUNTY saga following the visit to England in 1850 of the Pitcairn Pastor George Nobbs. The work includes considerable detail on the fate of the mutineers, their descendants and the present population; this edition benefits from 'additional intelligence respecting Pitcairn and the Islanders'. The Society continued to publish the work in various editions until the early years of the twentieth century. SCARCE IN ANY EARLY EDITION.…

The book bears the ink inscriptions of three previous owners across the front pastedown and the rear of the frontispiece: the first states "William Galthans[?] / His Book No.23"; the second, in a bold calligraphic hand, declares "J. S. Sanders / New York USA"; and the third, more curiously, "C. E. M. Valparaiso, Chili / 157 So 9th St. / Brooklyn N. York / USA". This same inscription by the somewhat mysterious third owner is repeated at numerous points throughout the book, always taking the same form (initials and Brooklyn address) with the exception of the place name, which changes each time, moving through Madeira, Canton, Rangoon, St. Thomas (Danish West Indies), Calcutta, New Orleans, Bombay, O'ahu (Hawaii), San Francisco, Singapore, Rio de Janeiro, Ville Franca, Pernambuco, Hong Kong, Galveston (Texas), Magellan Straits (Chile), and Yokohama. It would seem that "C. E. M." used the book to chart their own movements around South America, Asia, the Pacific, and the USA, turning what must have been a well-loved book into a memento of their own travels. Also pasted in are two 1890s newspaper clippings regarding Pitcairn, affixed to the pastedowns, as well as a wood-engraved illustration of the home of the first President of Pitcairn Island, Russell McCoy, affixed to the verso of one of the plates and captioned in manuscript. In addition, there is a late nineteenth-century printed hotel label for the "Hotel de Paris, Benares, India", printed on vibrant orange paper loosely laid in. An intriguing and exceptionally well-travelled copy. First published in 1853, Boyles's popular account describes the voyage of the Bounty, the mutiny, Captain Bligh's journey in an open boat, and the voyage of the Pandora, as well as much discussion of the subsequent history of Pitcairn and its inhabitants. Fourth edition. Publisher's original blue cloth with gilt vignette to the upper board and titles in gilt to the spine. Illustrated with 14 black and white engraved plates. An acceptable copy, the binding secure with tape repairs to the spine, a tear to the centre of the spine panel, splitting to the joints, and wear to the corners and board edges. The contents lacking the endpapers and with a twentieth-century library sticker to the front pastedown and a few occasional minor marks to page margins are otherwise in good order.
