The first complete American edition (so stated on title page), missing Johnston's portrait, volume I; but engraved and tissue guarded vignette scene from RASSELAS to Illustrated title page of volume II present. Both volumes apparently in original binding, and display moderate wear . binding is green floral cloth w/morocco leather (goat) gilt lettered spine labels (wear). Boards bumped, scuffed (edges), and w/some uneven coloration; as well, volume 2 backstrip has several nicks, the most noticeable (about 1/3" diameter) at top right leather label. The textblocks of both volumes are uniformly toned and than moderately foxed (each volume also has leaves with scattered dark brown stains).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; 2 volumes complete. Bound in full calf leather with 4 raised bands and a black title block on spines, spine gilt is nice and bright. Illustrated with steel engraved plates, both volumes with previous owners book plates, both fly leaves have glue residue from checkout stamp sheets that are no longer present. Plates are foxed, as are endpapers, occassional elsewhere, pages unmarked, binding tight. Hinges are firm and tight with no cracks.
