A charming illustrated edition of The Seasons, Thomson's celebrated poetical cycle on the British countryside, with His Life by Patrick Murdoch, and an Essay on the Plan and Manner of the poem by J. Aiken. Published in 1802, first published as a complete cycle in 1730. In full tree calf, with an illustrated frontispiece, vignette, and four other plates adjoining each of the seasons. Collated complete. An profound poetical cycle that flourished in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, influencing later Romantics such as Wordsworth, Byron and Keats. This charming illustrated edition also contains Murdoch's witty and popular short biography of Thomson as well as an insightful essay that assists readers in appreciating the hidden nuances of Thomson's masterpiece. In full tree calf. Externally, bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Cracking to joints, mostly to heads, and slight rubbing to edges. A couple of faint spots to rear pastedown, and faint damp staining to end paper extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are mostly bright and clean, with minor age toning, and tide marks to plate extremities. Good. book.
