This pest is being managed by insecticides which result in ecological backlash, destruction of beneficial insects and plant toxification. It is, therefore, im…perative to evaluate alternates of chemical control like host plant resistance, which may be induced by proper nutrient management. This research project was designed to estimate the variation in pyrilla population and yield components of sorghum associated with integration of nutrient management and chemical control. In present study, there were 5 treatments [T1(nutrient management program(NMP) of Ali-Akbar group without integration of chemical control); T2(NMP of Ali-Akbar group with integration of chemical control); T3(NMP of Warble without integration of chemical control); T4(NMP of Warble with integration of chemical control); T0(control)]. The results revealed that pyrilla population was found minimum in T2 and T4. Although the plant growth was good but higher pyrilla attack was found in T1 and T3. High grain yield, plant height, number of leaves and basal girth were observed in the nutrient applied treatments.

The field experiments included screening of 1…3 genotypes of bitter-gourd and tolerance studies. The laboratory experiments included the determination of biophysical and biochemical fruit traits which induce antixenosis and antibiosis in bitter-gourd against melon fruit fly. The fruit-length, fruit diameter, number of ridges/cm2, depth of ribs, pericarp thickness and fruit toughness were found to be most important biophysical fruit traits, which contributed antixenosis in bitter-gourd against melon fruit-fly. Similarly, quantity of ascorbic-acid, chlorophyll (chlorophyll a', b' and total chlorophyll), reducing sugars, total sugars, non reducing sugars, nitrogen, protein, phosphorus, potassium, tannin, flavonol, phenols, ash and silica played paramount role in inducing biochemical based antixenosis and antibiosis. The findings of endeavour persuade for the utilization of identified sources of resistance in crop breeding program of bitter-gourd against melon fruit fly.

Since, its maggots damage the fruits internally; its chemical control is difficult. It is, therefore, imperative to explore alternatives and develop…IPM strategy for the effective management of this pest. This book provides the readers with knowledge of various IPM strategies which can be used effectively for its management. The contents of this book consist of lab and field experiments which were carried out to evaluate different botanicals, food-baits, pheromones-baits-traps, oviposition-baits, insecticide-baited-foods/pheromones and cultural- control-tactics against melon fruit-fly in bitter- gourd. Highly effective of above mentioned tactics were integrated into 8 IPM-Models, which were evaluated at two localities. The results revealed that the descending order of the performance of tested IPM-Models was: IPM-Model-7 IPM-Model-3 IPM-Model-6 IPM-Model-4 IPM-Model-5 IPM-Model- 2 IPM-Model-1 IPM-Model-8. In conclusion, IPM- Model-3, IPM-Model-4, IPM-Model-5, IPM-Model-6 and IPM-Model-7 can be exercised in the areas where there are hot spots of melon fruit flies.
