First edition (Copac). Complete in 2 volumes, uniformly bound in the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Volume I is illustrated with 3 black and white plates and 3 woodcuts, and volume II with 1 colour plate, 1 black and white plate, and 3 woodcuts. Collated complete. With the previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. It reads 'Mac-donnell esqr. of new-hall. W: e: armstrong'. Isabella Romer was a prolific writer of the 19th century, best remembered for her works of travel writing. This particular work charts her pilgrimage from Egypt to Nubia to Palestine, and is ranked as one of her most accomplished works. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally sound, with light bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Crack to the front and rear joints of volume I, resulting in a small amount of fraying to the cloth, with the backstrip starting to lift. Additional small cracks to the tail of the front joint of volume II. Previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown of each, with light creases to the rear endpapers. The front hinge of volume I lightly strained, with a small crack to the tail. Ink inscription to the head of the front endpaper of volume I. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with the occasional mark, heavier to the first and last pages. Good. book.
