Half-title page name-clipped at top edge. According to the Supernatural Fiction database, a novel constructed around three ghost stories, none of them rationalized, one involving a mu…rder, and one which may well have been the originating suggestion for Kipling's famous ghost story "They." This copy a "NEW EDITION", 1899 pictorial yellowback edition, which followed the first of 1897. The third story is a haunted house story, complete with a screaming, evil-eyed ghost of a murderess who appears and vanishes ; she is accompanied by a sudden chill, a strong dog cowers at her approach -- scenes very like a Netflix ghost movies today! Scarce haunted house fiction, not in Locke, who does, however, have her previous novel "100,000 (pounds) vs. Ghosts", v. 1, page 123, of which he writes: "Mystery novel of ghosts and ahunting; solidly supernatural and a far cry from the author's usual product - horsey novels.".
