Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Gift inscription otherwise like new. The First tells the story of New Zealand's earliest successful aeroplane flights and the remarkable people behind them. Terry Moyle reconstructs the achievements of brothers Leo and Vivian Walsh, often described as New Zealand's own "Wright brothers", and places their work within the wider world of Edwardian innovation — bicycles, early motorcars, experimental engineering, and the first attempts at powered flight. Drawing on extensive archival research, Moyle corrects more than a century of assumptions about the 1911 Glenora Park flights and the fate of Manurewa, the aircraft that made history before disappearing from the record. The book also follows the wider Walsh family, including the sisters Veronica and Doreen, and their connections to figures such as Jean Batten, Aunt Daisy, and early women aviators.…

Illustrations (many in color). Bibliography. Notes and Sources. Index. Terry Moyle is a professional writer and artist. His illustrated history books are characterized by their engaging text, primary research sources and superb, realistic illustration. Artists Rosie and Terry collaborate as Contour Creative Studio. Their elegant designs and illustration have been a commercial presence for decades. Moyle/Louise's connection with New Zealand's graphic and cultural heritage is exceptionally sound. Terry Moyle has authored, and together with Rosie Louise, illustrated books on New Zealand's art deco, electrical appliances, and other subjects. Some of their art on the Endemic World site is from the book, âNew Zealand at the Beach'. Although informed by mid-20th Century realism and illustration, the artists have worked with vector illustration from the very beginning. "Vectors and the processes involved in working with vectors, enable art to be created in new ways," says Moyle. "There's the technical aspect and the essential intuitive side, with fine-tuning things to get the sensibility you're after." Their popular range of prints show the legacy of the artists' professional careers, with a consistent combination of mood and expertly crafted design. Art Deco Airports looks at the first airports of the world, specifically Airports of the 1920's and early 1930's. The book is illustrated in full color, with line drawings and photographs. With the 100 years of Commercial aviation occurring in 2019, Art Deco Airports marks that important anniversary. Focusing on airports in Great Britain, Europe, and the United States, all of which were heavily influenced by the art deco architecture of the era. These airport buildings were subject to enormous change as air transport became more popular and as aircraft technology meant entirely upgraded facilities. Many of these buildings were only in existence for sometimes 12 months before being either demolished or refurbished. Some of these fascinating buildings are also still in existence. The combination of these exotic and iconic buildings, fashion and associated aircrafts has never been captured in art before and will present an exciting and appealing aesthetic reminiscent of the art deco posters of that era. From a December 2, 2015 review by Stephen Craftl in Financial Review: Art Deco Airports: Airports of Dreams From 1920's & 1930's, by Terry Moyle captures a time when visiting an airport was a glamorous event. Covering airplanes, airports and the pioneers of the day, the exquisitely illustrated Art Deco Airports, highlights the magic of air travel. . Moyle canvasses airport architecture in Europe and the United States. The book is at pains to show that not only the airport architecture, but the streamlined planes themselves, are manifestations of the art deco sensibility. In the '20s and '30s, many airports were seen as a spectacle, both in the form of the buildings and the planes themselves. Families were often photographed standing in front of a plane in their finery topped off with cloche-style hats and straw boaters. Moyle and Louise capture the era with original photographs, maps, postcards and hand-drawn illustrations. Their book also reproduces plans, posters and stylized motifs in the art deco style. The airport experience of the time was more akin to a social activity. The French magazine 'L'Illustration', December 1924, shows two women farewelling each other at Le Bourget airport, one holding a tennis racket, the other with her dog in tow. Both are decked out in cloche hats, tweed coats and fine pump-heel shoes. Le Bourget airport was as impeccably detailed as the fashion of the day; its sculptures depicted goddesses in flight, preparing travelers for an ethereal experience. Another airport featured in the book, Cologne's Butzweilerhof has the ambience of a race carnival, with rows of roses and umbrel. Rosie Louise and Terry Moyle (illustrator).…
