A presentation run of this rare periodical, inscribed by the editor on the front pastedown, "For Lady Mountbatten. My dear Lady Mountbatten, This bound volume of Young Malayans comes to you and your husband with our very best wishes for your happiness and long life. Richard Sidney, Editor. 15 Perak Road, Kuala Lumpur, Malaya. 26 June 1952." The inscription is countersigned by four members of the magazine's staff, including Kong Yulin (secretary), Pang Yow Chee (manager), Chan Kai (photographer), and Lum Sien Yuen (general assistant). Immediately following the Second World War, Edwina Mountbatten established the Welfare Council for Malaya. In 1952, she toured south-east Asia and, following her return to the UK, called for St John Ambulance to send medical teams to provide aid to Malaya's "new villages" (resettlement camps). Her work, as with this periodical, reflected British beliefs that humanitarianism and education could be an effective tool of counterinsurgency. Quarto (305 x 215 mm). Illustrations in text; some mastheads printed in colour. Original blue buckram, spine lettered in black, front cover lettered in black within recessed panel, binder's ticket of Caxton Press, Kuala Lumpur, on front pastedown. Cloth sunned, some leaves browned, otherwise general toning internally: very good.
