Paperback. Condition: new. FitzGerald, Jennifer (illustrator). Paperback. "Promise me you'll look after Colleen and Greg" Romayne implored as she gasped for breath. "I promise you," Nathan said. He squeezed her hand gently. She tried to squeeze back, but couldn't. Then she died. And, for all intent and purpose, so did Nathan. Nathan O'Shaughnessy's life starts falling apart after his wife passes. His grandson, Greg, is killed by gang bangers and his granddaughter, Colleen, is traumatized. His daughter, Jill, is a drug addict. His loving cat, Gypsy, is murdered. One gang banger is killed by the other in a fit of rage. Nathan must stop the madness. Detective James Burton, who lost a partner to a gang banger in an alley in L.A., is determined justice will be served, one way or the other. Convinced Nathan and Burton are working too slowly, in the dead of night, Colleen confiscates her brother's car and proceeds to investigate on her own. Burton is staking out the killer's house and watches Colleen arrive, followed closely by Jill, with Nathan just minutes behind. A fight erupts between Colleen, her mother, and Jill's drug dealer. Burton intervenes and is killed. The killer runs, in an attempt to evade justice. Colleen, Nathan, and Jill are in hot pursuit, all determined that steel jacket justice will prevail. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Wendell Camp is a bitter man who believes his life in meaningless. After losing his wife and stillborn child, he figures God had deserted him. His sister, Tricia, can't convince him otherwise. His good buddy, Diego, tells him of a ton of gold lost in a quake near Muffin Mountain during the Civil War. Diego hopes to unearth the gold to help the children of the orphanage he was raised in. Diego leaves for Baja, California to search for the bandito who killed his parents. He intends to kill him. Billie Bob Budd and his wife Beth snugly up on their Salvation Army couch and watch, from their twelve dollar shack with a view, as a land developer stakes out plots of land below. "Ain't no way in hell I'm gonna let that happen." Tricia opens the door to room twelve and finds a dead man with his head bashed in. The only person who has a clue as to what happened is her aged mother who is in the first stages of Alzheimer's. As the story climaxes, Wendell has to race the town bully, Duane Murphy, to the top of Muffin Mountain in the annual Sisyphus Race. Duane will stop at nothing, including crippling Wendell, to triumph. While training for the race, Wendell finds he has more in common with Luce Anne Meeks, than running in the desert. After saving the life of an elderly customer at work, she is told by a fire captain the city of Vinedale is looking for minority applicants. She applies, passes all the tests, and is accepted. Armed only with a sweet disposition and a perchance toward pleasing others, she is ill equipped to succeed in a macho environment. During drill school, she is harassed by a fellow rookie who will stop at nothing to prove a female does not belong in the fire service. Once she is assigned to an engine company, she has to prove herself, all over again, to the members of her crew. Her roommate, Joanne, a perky and feisty optimist, guides her in slyly overcoming her problems. Hannah's twenty-eight year old captain, a self-proclaimed bachelor, slowly and begrudgingly, accepts her. Eventually he becomes more than just her captain. As you follow Hannah, and her fellow firefighters, through their escapades in the city of Vinedale, this sometimes humorous, always riveting, slightly off-beat, action packed novel will keep you engrossed from unexpected beginning until the nail biting ending. As the novel reaches its climax, Hannah saves the life of her engineer by making a life and death decision that almost costs her to lose her own. This item is printed on demand.
