Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. Text printed in black ink. No date, circa 1820. 4" x 7." Twelve pages, complete. Pages are loose. Pages are very clean and intact except for browning and the pages being split along spine and being loose. A Very Good copy. This is a tract about the life of Caroline Elizabeth Smelt (1800-1817), a pious young woman from Augusta, Georgia whose life was tragically cut short by an illness (described as "fever" herein). These extracts about her life were taken from the biographical account written by Reverend Moses Waddel (also, Waddell). William Bradford is listed as the sales agent on this edition. In this biographical account, episodes from Smelt's life as well as many apparent quotes by her are included. Caroline Elizabeth Smelt was born in Augusta on December 28, 1800. She became interested in being a devout Christian at an early age. Her mother had been tending to an orphan girl in their town who had come down with "fever" during a local epidemic. Smelt's mother overcame the fever, but to her mother's dismay, Smelt caught the fever. Smelt became very ill and bedridden, but she especially deepened her faith during this time. The biography describes how she wished to evangelize as many people as she could and often read from Scripture and recited hymns and Scriptural passages. Visitors, including the doctors who tended to her, are also described as being inspired by her upstanding character and Christian faith. After many ups and downs with her illness, Smelt unfortunately succumbed to it on September 20, 1817. Moses Waddel (1770-1840) was an American minister and educator based in Georgia and South Carolina. His biography, Memoirs of the Life of Carolien Elizabeth Smelt, became a best-seller in the United States and Britain. He also founded the Willington Academy in South Carolina and helped vitalize the University of Georgia in Athens.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents the life and writings of Caroline Elizabeth Smelt, a young woman whose Christian faith shaped her remarkably short life. Born in 1800 to wealthy parents in Georgia, Caroline displayed maturity and intelligence from a young age. Her diary, the primary source for this narrative, reveals her spiritual journey and unwavering belief in God's grace. The author traces Caroline's early piety, her struggles with vanity and worldliness, and her eventual surrender to Christ's love. Through her poignant reflections, readers witness the transformative power of faith and the impact it had on Caroline's relationships and daily life. The book sheds light on the spiritual awakening of the early 19th century, providing a glimpse into the personal experiences of those seeking salvation amidst societal and religious change. Caroline's story serves as an inspiring example of how, even in the face of adversity and the allurements of the world, faith can anchor the soul and guide one's path.
