Contact seller4-star sellerOctavo, blue cloth (hardcover), gilt lettering, 208 pp. Fine in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket with minor edgewear. From dust jacket: Some years ago, Tony Morrison, zoologist, filmaker, traveler, and writer, worked with te BBC on a film about the Nasca Lines in Peru, those strange, absolutely straight lines which go up… hill and down, across gulleys without losing any of their straightness (one goes 29 kilometers up and down, incredibly directly). These lines cover more than 250 square miles of desert between the Andes and the Pacific, south of Lima. The lines were of such interest to Morrison that he spent more years in their study. Who made them and when? What were they used for? George Hawkins, author of Stonehenge Decoded, and Beyond Stonehenge, has studied the lines and their relation to astronomy. Morrison also met and talked much with Maria Reiche, noted German mathematician, who has spent 30 years of study in the area. These fascinating lines have been the subject of much wild speculation -- often very unscientific -- that is, the proofs do not stand up against logical argument. Although Morrison did not realize it at the time, various analogies had been made by the "fringe" prehistorians. "Nasca with its incredibly straight lines could be part of the worldwide grid of lines," lines which some believe link places which were sacred to the earliest inhabitants of the earth. After much study and work with people who had studied the lines longer than he had, Morrison came to believe that the Nasca Lines led to small religious shrines (wak'as) where burnt offerings were made to the ancient Indian gods. Yet, the incredible straightness of the lines is just as interesting as their purpose. The text is written with admirable clarity and is accompanied by remarkable photographs. Included in the text are four picture essays. This book adds to the literature on mysterious, out-of-the-way places of great antiquity. It is reminiscent of Hawkins' books on Stonehenge, and Peter Tompkins' The Secrets of the Great Pyramids and Mysteries of the Mexican Pyramids. Ancient Civilization, South American History, South America, Native American, Mythology, Religion, Sociology yslic.
