Nas folhas iniciais constam um privilégio régio e respectivo alvará, assinado pelo próprio Marquês de Pombal, retirando ao colégio dos Nobres as faculdades do ensino dos estudos e da impressão dos livros clássicos matemáticos, transferindo as mesmas em exclusivo para a Universidade de Coimbra. Obra rara. Primeira edição, desconhecida por Inocêncio que apenas refere edições oitocentistas. Inocêncio V, 75. ?José Monteiro da Rocha, do Conselho de Sua Majestade, Comendador da Ordem de Cristo, Cónego magistral da Sé de Leiria; primeiro Lente jubilado da Faculdade de Matemática, Director do Observatório astronómico, e Vice reitor da Universidade de Coimbra; Mestre do Príncipe da Beira; Socio e Director de classe da Academia Real das Ciências de Lisboa, etc. etc. - Nasceu em Canavezes, vila situada na margem direita do Tâmega, próxima de Amarante, a em 1734. Diz-se que sendo levado ainda na infância para o Brasil, cursára os estudos no colégio dos Jesuítas da Baía; que ali professára o instituto de Santo Inácio; e que por ocasião da expulsão destes regulares em 1759 ele preferira abandonar os seus consócios, deixando se ficar na mesma cidade, onde o governador que então era o encarregára da educação de seus filhos. Outros pretendem que, tendo entrado na ordem em Portugal, só depois da expulsão dela fosse parar á Bahia, d'onde voltou para o reino ao fim de alguns anos. Conta se como certo, que no tempo em que o Marquês de Pombal projectava a reforma da Universidade, o mandára chamar, em razão das informações que obtivera da sua capacidade e Ciência, achando se ele ainda então no Brasil, segundo uns e conforme outros em Coimbra, já de volta da Baía. Parece que não fôra sem grande receio que o ex-jesuíta comparecêra perante o ministro, o qual recebendo o com afabilidade lhe perguntou: «Qual das cadeiras da Universidade se julgava apto para reger?» - A isto respondeu modestamente o interrogado: «Aquela que os mais não quiserem.» Então o marquês, batendo lhe amigavelmente com a mão no ombro, lhe disse: «Sossegue, que há-de ser empregado!» Tratando-se para logo da reforma, foi-lhe incumbida, e por ele organizada e redigida a parte dos novos Estatutos da Universidade que diz respeito ás Ciências Naturais, e á Matemática. Traduziu e preparou depois alguns compêndios para uso das aulas respectivas, como abaixo se dirá. A sua fama de matemático insigne não ficou concentrada nos domínios portugueses; espalhou-se pela Europa, onde o seu nome é conhecido e mencionado com honra. D. João VI, quando príncipe regente, o chamou para a côrte, nomeando o Mestre do príncipe D. Pedro, e mais infantes, cargo que desempenhou até à saída da família real para o Brasil em 1807. Tendo comprado uma quinta no sítio de S. José de Ribamar, próximo de Lisboa, ali viveu. José Monteiro da Rocha legou por morte á Academia das Ciências todos os seus manuscritos, os quais foram mandados entregar a esta corporação pela Secretaria dos Negócios do Reino, contidos em um caixote, a cuja abertura se procedeu em o 1.° de Março de 1825. Tive ocasião de examinar o inventário que deles se formou, e que existe ainda arquivado na Academia. Versam pela maior parte sobre assumptos próprios das Ciências matemáticas, principalmente da astronomia, havendo entre eles várias memórias incompletas. Foi-lhe mandado conferir o grau de doutor por portarias do Marquês de Pombal, de 3 e 7 de Outubro de 1772.? The first pages contain a royal privilege and the respective licence signed by the Marquis of Pombal himself, removing from the College of Nobels the faculties of teaching the studies and printing of the classic math books, transferring those exclusively to the University of Coimbra.
