Armorial bookplate of Francis Gray Smart. Mohl, née Clarke, 1793-1883, was born in Westminster, but lived in Paris for much of her life. She was hostess at one of the most celebrated salon of the era, and counted among her friends Florence Nightingale, George Eliot and Elizabeth Gaskell, who wrote a significant portion of North and South while staying with her. She was a keen advocate of female education and political emancipation.

VG.** Jeanne-Françoise Julie Adélaïde Récamier (1777 1849), known as Juliette, was a French socialite, whose salon drew Parisians from the leading literary and political circles of the early 19th century.** "Mary Elizabeth Mohl or Mary Elizabeth Clarke (1793 1883) was a British writer who was known as a salon hostess in Paris. She was known by her nickname of "Clarkey". She was admired for her independence and conversation. She eventually married the orientalist Julius von Mohl. She was an ardent Francophile, a feminist, and a close friend of Florence Nightingale. She wrote about her interest in the history of women's rights".
