Across the pages of its past have moved Indians, frontiersmen, three future presidents of the United States, and such colorful personalities as Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, Sam Houston, 'Parson' Brownlow, Alvin York, and 'Boss' Crump. Interestingly, many other states owe a debt to Tennessee for providing pioneers and statesman who built their states into greatness. Physically, the state of Tennessee is long and narrow and with such a wide diversity of topographical features that the people in its 'three grand divisions' have had difficulty in communicating with and even understanding each other. Within this diversity, however, is a plethora of natural resources that has made rapid economic development possible.".
