Hoffmann arbeitete er sie in deutsche Form um, denn nur so konnte er seinen Zweck, zum Ersatz der schmerfälligen und kostspieligen Reallexika ähnlicher Art practische, jedem zugängliche Handbücher zu schaffen, wirklich erreichen. Trotz dieser populären Absicht sind sie übrigens ganz wissenschaftlich gehalten, und setzen demgemäß auch eine gewisse wissenschaftliche Bildung, namentlich die Kenntniß der beiden class. Sprachen und theilweise sogar des Hebräischen voraus, denn überall geht M. auf die Bezeichnung der Sachen in den Ursprachen, bei dem Onomasticon sogar auf die Etymologie der Eigennamen, besonders der hebräischen zurück. Daher errangen sich diese Bücher auch rasch eine gewisse Geltung, die das bibl. Antiquitätenlexicon bis in die letzten Jahrzehnte des 18. Jahrhunderts behauptete" (O. Kämmel in ADB). - Am Schluß etwas wasserfleckig und durchgehend gebräunt, gutes Exemplar. Sprache: deutsch.
