Protagonista della scultura americana del Secondo Ottocento, Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907), è il più significativo scultore dell'Età d'Oro americana, il periodo storico successivo alla Guerra Civile (1861-1865). Difatti, l'influsso che Augustus Saint-Gaudens ebbe su…lla scultura americana tramite la sua opera e il suo insegnamento è comparabile all'impatto che la "scuola di Vela" ebbe nel panorama artistico italiano di fine Ottocento. Con questa rassegna si offre al pubblico svizzero e internazionale l'occasione di scoprire e apprezzare un artista sconosciuto - come d'altronde è poco conosciuta tutta l'arte americana antecedente la seconda Guerra Mondiale. Nato nel 1848 da padre francese e madre irlandese emigrati negli Stati Uniti, Saint-Gaudens trascorse numerosi anni in Europa, dapprima a Parigi (1867-1870) in seguito in Italia (1870-75), dove perfezionò la sua formazione di scultore e incisore, e iniziò la sua folgorante carriera, sostenuta da facoltosi e influenti committenti americani residenti nella Città Eterna. La sua ammirazione per l'arte e l'architettura rinascimentali - e soprattutto per il rilievo e le medaglie di quell'epoca - segnerà le sue scelte di stile, caratterizzate da una personale interpretazione del realismo Quattrocentesco e dell'eredità antica, una sintesi la quale, a sua volta, influenzerà la scultura americana di fine Ottocento. Di Augustus Saint-Gaudens sono conosciuti soprattutto i monumenti pubblici agli eroi della Guerra Civile americana e gli straordinari e raffinati ritratti a rilievo. Tra i monumenti pubblici - che egli ebbe molto a cuore - si annoverano, oltre al toccante Memoriale Shaw (1897) realizzato in onore del mitico 54° Reggimento Massachusetts e del suo comandante Robert Gould Shaw - una composizione di tenore epico che comprende i primi ritratti di soldati afro-americani in scultura -, il ritratto stante del presidente Abraham Lincoln per Chicago (l887); il vigoroso Monumento all'ammiraglio David Farragut (1881) per New York, e il tardo Monumento al Generale Sherman, di grande impatto e di sottile introspezione psicologica, ivi inaugurato nel 1881. Queste opere monumentali sono rappresentate in mostra attraverso bozzetti, riduzioni e studi. Accanto a questa produzione eroica e patriottica sono di grande interesse per un pubblico moderno i bellissimi ritratti a rilievo, spesso di grande formato, di artisti e intellettuali, di amici e conoscenti, di adulti e bambini, ma anche di committenti di prestigio internazionale, dai quali emerge invariata nella qualità la grande sensibiltà dell'artista nel trattamento della superficie materica - trattasi quasi di dipinti realizzati con il bronzo - e nella sottile resa psicologica dei ritrattati. Il catalogo che accompagna la mostra rappresenta l'unica pubblicazione in lingua italiana su questo artista e su aspetti della scultura e del contesto culturale americano di quella stagione artistica.
