Kline, a pioneer in hypnotherapy: "I have been studying all the literature I can get my hands on, in a search for some information as to what can be done in the field of orthoptics with the help of hypnosis." He expresses surprise for a rather unexpected reason: "This does not make sense to me, since almost all visual 'disorders' are a very simple form of hysteria, involving some type of manifestation of a defense mechanism." He gives strabismus (improper alignment of the eyes) and amblyopia (a.k.a. "lazy eye") as examples.
