Pages are very clean and intact except for slight browning, slight wear along spine, and faint spots of discoloration. A Very Good copy. This is a sermon that was originally given by…pastor James Miltimore on November 24, 1807 in Belleville, Newbury, Massachusetts to commemorate the dedication of the town's new church. Miltimore centers his sermon upon a passage from the Old Testament about Jacob being in the "house of God" while on an arduous and frightening journey. Miltimore briefly summarizes biographical background about Jacob and his parents, Isaac and Rebekah, and how he was sent away from his home and forced to travel to Padanaram. One night, Jacob, overcome by tiredness, had only the open wilderness as a place of rest. Jacob then received restful sleep and visions from God due to his Christian faith and prayer. Jacob exclaimed that he was in the house of God. Miltimore explains that any place can be a house of God, or a church, so long as God's spirit dwells there and is a place filled with Christian worship. Miltimore downplays the material aspect of a church and explains that the presence of God, worship, and prayer are instead what make a church, a church. Miltimore also refers to other parts in the Bible about church dedications. In the back are brief messages of goodwill and calls for having a strong Christian faith presumably for prospective members of the new church.
