"Né avec des talens pour la guerre, il servit de bonne heure [.]. [.] Réunissant en lui le double mérite d'homme de guerre et d'homme d'état, il fut nommé président du conseil des finances en 1715, conseiller au conseil de régence en 1718, et chevalier des ordres du roi en 1724. Dans la guerre de 1733, il servit au siège de Philisbourg, pendant lequel il fut honoré du bâton de maréchal de France. Il eut le commandement des troupes pendant l'hiver de 1734, et reprit Worms sur les Impériaux. Nommé, en 1735, général en chef des troupes françaises en Italie, il alla cueillir de nouveaux lauriers.
