Il titolo di questa piccola mostra è tratto da un passo della biografia di Giulio Romano riportata nelle…Vite di Giorgio Vasari: «Per tutta la Lombardia giovò di maniera, che que' popoli hanno posto di sorte in uso l'arte del disegno, inusitata sino al suo tempo, che ne sono uscite dipoi pratiche persone e bellissimi ingegni». Se l'encomiastiche parole dell'aretino delineano un quadro probabilmente esagerato, è pur vero che l'arrivo di Giulio a Mantova - nel 1524 - rappresentò uno spartiacque, segnando un prima e un dopo nel panorama del suo tempo e per un contesto ben più ampio del piccolo principato dei Gonzaga. Questa piccola mostra restituisce un frammento del contesto evocato da Vasari, visualizzando uno spaccato della "maniera moderna" del XVI secolo attraverso un piccolo, ma significativo, corpus di disegni di - tra gli altri - Giulio Romano, Parmigianino e Luca Cambiaso.
