Cet ouvrage est la première monographie scientifique d'un château des Vosges lorraines. Elle est fondée sur de larges dépouillements d'archives et surtout sur les résultats d'une fouille archéologique exhaustive menée de 1984 à 1992. Succédant à une première forteresse de l'an Mil, le château d'Épinal a été construit par l'évêque de Metz Jacques de Lorraine vers le milieu du XIIIe siècle. Il se présente comme une enceinte polygonale perchée sur une crête rocheuse, pourvue d'un puissant donjon résidentiel et d'une grande citerne à corps filtrant. La fouille a mis au jour les restes du logis seigneurial ainsi que d'autres bâtiments (arsenal, logis du capitaine, four, chapelle.). Agrandi et adapté à l'artillerie par les ducs de Lorraine au début du XVIe siècle, le château a été détruit par les troupes de Louis XIV en 1670. L'ouvrage, abondamment illustré de plans, de dessins et de photographies, comprend aussi une étude du mobilier trouvé au cours de la fouille (projectiles, pipes, pièces de monnaie, céramique culinaire et céramique de construction, objets métalliques, verre.). The geographically and chronologically wide-ranging subjects of the essays in this collection, by scholars from the British Isles and the Continent, are united bya common theme, namely the significance of genealogy and kinship ties in determining political events in the middle ages.
