Hardcover. First Edition. Grey cloth over boards with stamped silver lettering; 47 pp.; richly illustrated. "American sculptor Michael Heizer (born 1944) was among the first artists to reject the white cube gallery space in favor of the open land and majestic vistas of the western United States. Michael Heizer marks the unveiling of 'Collapse' (1967/2016) and 'Compression Line' (1968/2016) at Glenstone Museum. Monumental in scale but composed with rhythm and elegance, the two sculptures individually embody opposing aspects of Heizer's sculptural practice: beams exploding from an unseen depth and a sliver of space compressed so precisely that the viewer is unaware of the vast negative area hidden beneath it. This book includes an interview with the artist, previously unpublished archival images and extensive process and installation photography." -- Philadelphia Museum of Art Website. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Heizer, Michael (illustrator). 132pp, 154 illustrations, 72 in full-colour. Book unused, looks new and unread, green boards with black diagrammatic design are fading/discolouring slightly around edges. Fully-photographic dust jacket in excellent clean condition. Includes essay by Douglas C. McGill. 'Effigy mounds' were first utilized by early Native Americans in the Illinois region, over a thousand years ago. Heizer pays homage to them in his five enormous earth sculptures in the shape of animals indigenous to the area - they were commissioned in 1983 as part of an effort to reclaim 150 acres of strip-mined land on the Illinois River. The book records the work in progress and the final results, with accompanying text by the sculptor. It's a heavy book and may incur extra postage charges outside the UK.

Largely known in the United States for work which involved driving a motorcycle in the desert to create massive, mysterious patterns, this publication is the first full-scale presentation of his ideas. Heizer's huge sculptures and semi-geometrical patterns in the desert are a bold act of large-scale markmarking, while also suggesting the more troublesome aspects of man's use of nature." ; FINE/FINE.
