Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First edition issued in serial parts, which were soon after custom-rebound individually in deluxe, uniformly bound late 19th-century half-leather (likely Morocco) by premier Cambridge, Mass., & Harvard University craftsman John H. H. McNamee (artisan stamp on front fly lea…f, see photos). This is a near complete collection of Charles Aubert's celebrated fin-de-siècle French galante novellas (missing Volumes VI: La Fleur d'oranger and IX: La Pantoufle). Each volume contains a standalone novella in French, from the original 1882-1885 serial printing. All 18 bindings tight & square, leather spines & boards show light shelf rubbing, corners worn down on some volumes, one top edge chipped, spines darkened slightly, spine gilt type bright & clean, top edges gilt, matching marbled end paper pastedown & fly leaves vibrant & fine. Fore-edges untrimmed throughout. Original tissue guards very good w/ occasional light crease & one tear. Early pencil inventory markup (880/20) preserved on one fly leaf & a small historical penciled price markup (.50) is present on another. No ownership marks or other writing observed. There is some occasional light foxing or smudging/marks but the majority of pages are bright & clean for age; six volumes have strong foxing which is isolated to the title page spread and front matter (see last photo montage which shows the foxing on these six spreads). Text blocks beautifully printed by prominent French houses including P. Mouillot, Charles Hérisey, J. Moreau et Fils, P. Faivre, & Ed. Rey. Original etched frontispieces & title-page vignettes protected by original tissue guards by artists Jules Hanriot & Paul Mesplès, preserving their distinct, deep plate marks & rich black ink. Select volumes feature whimsical two-color printing with illustrations. The original color lithographed illustrated paper wrap from the first volume has been preserved & bound into the rear (see photo). No other paper wraps present. A beautiful & rare crossover collection showcasing provocative French literature preserved in premium New England heritage bindings. Please review photos, ships same day or next day. Signature required upon delivery. Hanriot, Jules-Armand; Mesplès, Paul-Eugène; Morose, Ch. (illustrator).
