Elizabeth Wood is the author of three books, Roots of Russia?s War in Ukraine; Performing Justice: Agitation Trials in Early So…viet Russia and The Baba and the Comrade: Gender and Politics in Revolutionary Russia. She has written numerous scholarly articles on Russian history and current events. Within MIT, Professor Wood serves as co-director of the MISTI Russia Program, Coordinator of Russian Studies. William Pomeranz, the Director of the Wilson Center?s Kennan Institute, is an expert guide to the complexities of political and economic developments in Russia, particularly through the lens of law. He is the author of Law and the Russian State: Russia's Legal Evolution from Peter the Great to Vladimir Putin. E. Wayne Merry is Senior Fellow for Europe and Eurasia at the American Foreign Policy Council in Washington, DC. In twenty-six years in the United States Foreign Service, he worked as a diplomat and political analyst specializing in Soviet and post-Soviet political issues, including six years at the American Embassy in Moscow, where he was in charge of political analysis on the breakup of the Soviet Union and the early years of post-Soviet Russia. He also served at the embassies in Tunis, East Berlin, and Athens and at the US Mission to the United Nations in New York. In Washington he served in the Treasury, State, and Defense Departments. In the Pentagon he served as the Regional Director for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia. In February 2014, Russia initiated a war in Ukraine, its reasons for aggression unclear. Each of this volume's authors offers a distinct interpretation of Russia's motivations, untangling the social, historical, and political factors that created this war and continually reignite its tensions. What prompted President Vladimir Putin to send troops into Crimea? Why did the conflict spread to eastern Ukraine with Russian support? What does the war say about Russia's political, economic, and social priorities, and how does the crisis expose differences between the EU and Russia regarding international jurisdiction? Did Putin's obsession with his macho image start this war, and is it preventing its resolution? The exploration of these and other questions gives historians, political watchers, and theorists a solid grasp of the events that have destabilized the region.

Paperback. Condition: New. If we could know in 2020 what we will know in 2025 (only five foreseeable years into the future), how would we change our attitudes, actions, and the way in which we practice law, the services we offer, the clients we target, and the ways in which we choose to deliver our services? Indeed - if we could… have known a year ago the events of the first three months in 2020, what might we have done to prepare? The American writer and humorist, Mark Twain, advised: "When everybody is out digging for gold, the business to be in is selling shovels!" So, what foreseeable trend may represent the figurative "shovel" that every client will need tomorrow.
