Hardcover. First Dublin Edition. Quarto, [2], xii, [5], 4-643 pages, plus 3 plates ('Great Falls of Columbia River'; 'Great Shoot and Rapid'; and 'Mouth of Columbia River'). In Good minus condition. In contemporary brown leather half binding with marbled paper boards; gilt borders along leather elements; spine paneled with gilt decoration and titling; marbled text block edges. Boards show rubbing and chipping along all edges and at the fore corners, with sections of exposed board. Scuffing and toning to covers. Front board detached; splitting at the rear joint. Spine is cracked, with chipping at the head and tail; end bands present. Text block is moderately worn and darkly toned along the edges. Faint penciling on endpapers; contemporary pen ownership inscription on second free endpaper, which is mostly illegible. Interior lightly toned and foxed, with sparse marginal chipping and tears throughout. Faint, sparse pencil marginalia present. Small ink stain on page 349 over text. Housed in a new archival mylar sleeve. Shelved Room A. HB Consignment. . This scarce Dublin edition was published shortly after Bradford and Inskeep's 1814 first edition. The two-volume set chronicles the events of the most famous exploratory voyage undertaken in the United States, and consists of the edited journals of Lewis and Clark themselves. Vol. II begins with journal entries from October 1805 and continues through the party's arrival at the Pacific ocean and subsequent return journey, ending with their ultimate arrival in St. Louis in September 1806. The full set of the Dublin edition also includes The Life of Captain Lewis by Thomas Jefferson, which appears in the first volume and is not included here. Sabin describes this work as "to-day the best work we have on the countries described," and points out that despite Paul Allen being the only editor credited in the book itself, "the work was done by Mr. Nicholas Biddle from the material left by Captain Lewis". From Wagner-Camp: "This reissue of the Bradford and Inskeep edition of 1814 was printed with larger, clearer type, thirty-two lines to the page instead of the earlier thirty-six, and contained other editorial changes. Coues considered it to be the best of the Biddle-Allen editions". References: Sabin 40831, Wagner-Camp 13:6. 1407463. Special Collections - Upstairs.

The cost of the transaction was $15,000,000, around $18 per square mile. Control of the entire area was taken over by the United States, including large areas of the country which was inhabited - and managed - by Native Americans, who had never themselves ceded the land. Following the Purchase, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned an expedition to explore the territory and report back in as much detail as possible. A primary aim was to find a new travel route across the country, ensuring an American presence in the area before other colonial powers took advantage of the area and tried to establish their own footholds. The Lewis and Clark Expedition - alternatively known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition - set out from Camp Dubois on the 14th May 1804, crossing the Continental Divide, eventually reaching St. Louis, Missouri, in 1806. They were famously assisted in interpretation and interactions with local tribes by Sacagawea, a Lemni Shoshone woman who accompanied the expedition. The Lewis and Clark Expedition introduced the United States government to various Native American tribes and how trade with them could be promoted, alongside advising on the viability of the path they followed. Various botanical and zoological specimens were returned to the East Coast, including corn, or maize, grown by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello. It took nearly 10 years for Lewis and Clark to publish their journals, first in Philadelphia in octavo format in 1814 as History of the Expedition under the Command of Captain Lewis and Clark, to the Sources of the Missouri, thence across the Rocky Mountains and down the River Colombia to the Pacific Ocean. Here we find the first British edition, including Neele's highly important folding map, showing the expedition route.
