First Edition
Trade Paperback. Condition: Good. Firrst Edition Assumed. 57 Pages Stapled binding with green covers. There are seven lines of penciled notes on the front endpaper. Pages 12 thru 15 the character named Callimaco is high-lighted with green marker pen. No other marks. Mandragola is a rarity: a literary work written by a thinker who wrote political treatises of the greatest importance. This translation attempts to be as literal as is consistent with English usage. When possible, the same Italian word is rendered by the same English one. Special attention has been paid to words and phrases which are significant in other writings of Machiavelli-such as animo, bene, case del mondo, prudenzia, remedio, and virtu. In the poems, rhyme and meter have given way to meaning, although the stanzas, lines, and (where possible) word order of the Italian are reproduced. Idioms are translated as closely as possible in the text, and are explained in the notes. Passages in Latin are reproduced in the text and translated in the notes. The volume contains a brief Introduction and a Note on Names of Characters.

Paperback. Condition: Gut. X, 168 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - minimal berieben, Buchrücken leicht ausgeblichen, Kopfschnitt stockfleckig, sonst guter Zustand / minimally rubbed, spine slightly faded, top edge foxed, otherwise good condition. - Through a close reading of four plays by Aeschylus, Euripides, Machiavelli, and Shakespeare, Mera Flaumenhaft shows how each playwright's presentation of political themes within his drama relates to his view of the broadly political function of the theater in his society. Examining the moral and political effects of the dramas and the context in which each was performed, she asks, in each case, what sort of community of citizen-spectators was formed by the looking together they did in the theater. From the role of classical tragedy in maintaining the ancient city, to the role of the modern history-play in forming and maintaining the modern nation-state, Flaumenhaft asks what we twentieth-century citizens can learn from the plays we watch and the ways we watch them.
