Trade Paperback. Condition: Good. Firrst Edition Assumed. 57 Pages Stapled binding with green covers. There are seven lines of penciled notes on the front endpaper. Pages 12 thru 15 the character named Callimaco is high-lighted with green marker pen. No other marks. Mandragola is a rarity: a literary work written by a thinker wh…o wrote political treatises of the greatest importance. This translation attempts to be as literal as is consistent with English usage. When possible, the same Italian word is rendered by the same English one. Special attention has been paid to words and phrases which are significant in other writings of Machiavelli-such as animo, bene, case del mondo, prudenzia, remedio, and virtu. In the poems, rhyme and meter have given way to meaning, although the stanzas, lines, and (where possible) word order of the Italian are reproduced. Idioms are translated as closely as possible in the text, and are explained in the notes. Passages in Latin are reproduced in the text and translated in the notes. The volume contains a brief Introduction and a Note on Names of Characters.

Description: A note about the dust jackets for this series -- beginning with the publication of Genesis in 1964, the books were published as they were completed. Up until 1972, the jackets were all the same -- a simple graphic design by George Giusti showing the Anchor symbol o…n a cream colored background. After that time though, the covers were greatly transformed -- they came alive with outstanding works from various artists. This is Volume 12 in the Anchor Bible series of book by book translations of the Bible. The publisher's blurb declares ''The Anchor Bible marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation among scholars in biblical research; each volume is the work of an outstanding Protestant, Catholic or Jewish authority on the Bible, and the entire project is under the general editorship of William Foxwell Albright, Professor Emeritus of Semitic Languages at Johns Hopkins University, and David Noel Freedman, Professor of Hebrew and Old Testament Literature at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. The aim is to make the Old and New Testaments accessible to the modern reader; its methods are to arrive at the meaning of the Bible through exact translation and extended exposition, and to reconstruct, as much as possible, the ancient settings of the biblical story.''
