Couverture souple. Condition: Comme neuf. Edition originale. Paris 2003. 1 Volume/1. -- Comme Neuf -- Broché . Format 21 x 14 cm . ------- 212 pages. ********************** "" Connaît-on encore aujourd'hui Mencius (372-289 av. Condition: Good. 27.2x16.5cm. An exceptionally rare Chinese two-tier woodblock edition(兩截版) of the Mengzi, comprising vol 4-7 of the main text in the lower register and the complete commentary Mengzi Biaolun Zhuojie compiled by Zhu Xiao Huanzhai of Shangyuan in the upper register. The volume is preserved in a custom-made Western-style case, the spine titled in French "Philosophe Chinois." Additional contemporary French annotations appear on a paper slip affixed to the front wrapper and on the inner lining of the case. These features strongly suggest that the book was brought to France by missionaries in the 18th century and studied in a European scholarly context. The two-tier layout (兩截版, literally "two-register block") is produced by dividing a single woodblock horizontally into upper and lower registers: the lower section carries the main classical text, while the upper section provides explanatory commentary, allusions, and didactic notes intended to aid comprehension. Such a layout can also be found in vernacular fiction and drama. This copy therefore represents a particularly rare specimen of a Chinese two-tier woodblock classical edition. The presence of contemporary French annotations and European housing further makes it an excellent example of a Chinese book transmitted and studied overseas in the early modern period. Minor loss affecting characters at the upper left corner of the first leaf; verso also torn but without loss of text. Front wrapper with a small tear.…

The book is one of the Chinese Thirteen Classics, and explores Mencius' views on the topics of moral and political philosophy, often as a dialogue with the ideas presented by Confucianism. . The interviews and conversations are depicted as being either between Mencius and the various rulers of the Warring States period, or with his students and other contemporaries. The book documents Mencius' travel across the states, and his philosophical conversations and debates with those he meets on his journey. A number of scholars suggest that the text was not written by Mencius himself, but rather by his disciples. The text is believed to have been written during the late 4th century BC. . The creation of the Mencius, serves as a further elaboration on the Confucian school of thought called 'subjective idealism.' Through this work, Mencius developed the theory of natural goodness (xingshan), that confers that all people have an intrinsic cardinal virtues, and that these virtues are developed in the same way that knowledge is cultivated. . The Mencius came to be regarded as one of the most important texts that explores the philosophy of Confucianism. Mainly, due to its philosophical dialogue with the Analects of Confucius. Despite this noted importance, the Mencius was not canonized as one of the Chinese Classics until over 1,000 years later during the Song-dynasty. . There exists four virtues of morality that makes up one's "sprouts" (duan): "humanity" (rén) "appropriateness" (yì) "ritual propriety" (li) "wisdom" (zhì) . Extracted from Wikipedia below. .
