Four volumes in monastic-style bindings, small octavos measuring approx. 17x10 cm, bound in embossed and decorated pigskin-covered boards, binding of Vol. III slightly variant [see photos], spine lettering indistinct or absent; three of the covers bear the initials "GHBS" and the date 1611 in gilt, with elaborate embossed coat of arms; paginated [xvi], 808; [xvi], 1013; [xxiv], 812; and [xvi], 829; bindings square and tight, pages with light age toning, some slight marginal worming not affecting the text.…

Eine Rarität. --- Krafft: Hans K. (Crato), Buchdrucker zu Wittenberg im 16. Jahrhundert. Geboren, wie er selbst in seinem Drucke "Psalterium" (vgl. unten) angibt, zu Usingen in der Wetterau, in welchem Jahre ist nicht bekannt, gilt er wo nicht als ein jüngerer Bruder, so doch als ein naher Verwandter von Melanchthon's Freund Johann Crato v. Krafftheim (Bd. IV S. 567), der unseren K. nach dem Tode des Buchdruckers Georg Rhau (vgl. d.) nach Wittenberg gezogen haben mag. Wenigstens wurde ihm, obgleich noch mehrere nicht namenslose typographische Werkstätten daselbst bestanden, vor allen Anderen der Druck der meisten Melanchthonischen Schriften zugewiesen. Aus seinem äußeren Leben wissen wir, daß er seit 1567 Mitglied des Wittenbergischen Rathscollegiums war, welche Stelle er bis 1576 bekleidete und daß er, weil nach 1577 unter seinem Namen kein Buch mehr erscheint, wol in diesem Jahre gestorben ist. Seine Thätigkeit als Drucker begann mit dem Jahre 1549 und die Zahl der bis zu seinem Tode gelieferten Preßerzeugnisse beläuft sich auf 111, theilweise in wiederholten Auflagen, welche sich sämmtlich durch reine, große und splendide Lettern und ungemein sauberes Papier auszeichnen (aus: Wikisource). +++ This is volume III of Martin Luther`s collected works, foreword by Philipp Melanthon, printed by Johann Crato (Hans Krafft), Martin Luther`s own book printer, solidly bound on wooden board, leather spine with gilded title and ornaments, slight leather tear along the spine, nevertheless solid, excellent paper quality, almost no foxing, clearly printed, ancient water marks running throughout the pages (bottom edge), not affecting the text, several initials, altogether satisfying condition for this genuinely rare item. +++ Tome III des oeuvres complètes de Martin Luther avec introduction de Philipp Melanthon, reliure demi cuir, avec pièce de titre, dorures, 5 nerfs, endommagée sur le plat de devant, néanmoins l`ouvrage reste solide, excellente qualité de papier et d`impression, initiales, pratiquement aucunes rousseurs, anciennes mouillures en bas des pages n`affectant pas le texte, dans l`ensemble solide et en état tout à fait satisfaisant. --- 22 x 30 Cm. 2,8 Kg. +++ Stichwörter: 16.
