Juifs tous les deux. L'un Grec, et l'autre Roumain. Nés à un jour d'intervalle, la même année, en 1934.« On est de son enfance comme on… est d'un pays », disait Saint-Exupéry. Mais il y a enfance et enfance. Et la trace qu'elle laisse en chacun de nous est là pour toujours.L'un, c'est Georges Moustaki, que tout le monde connaît : un enfant d'Alexandrie, une ville heureuse de la Méditerranée, ensoleillée, insouciante, où le mot « intolérance » n'existe pas.L'autre, c'est Siegfried Meir. Né à Francfort, où son père vivait avec sa famille. Tous arrêtés en 1941. Expédiés à Auschwitz d'abord. Puis trois ans plus tard Siegfried était seul à ce moment-là au camp de Mauthausen.Ils se sont connus dans les années 1950. Puis ils se sont perdus de vue. De loin en loin, ils se retrouvaient. Un jour, Siegfried a raconté à son ami ce qu'avaient été ces années, dont il n'avait jamais parlé à personne. Et Moustaki a consigné son récit, tel qu'il l'avait entendu, sans rien y ajouter, sans rien cacher, sans faire de phrases, dans sa vérité.
