First Edition
Stapled Wraps. Condition: Very Good Plus. Lou Mayer et al (illustrator). First Edition. New York: Puck Publishing Corporation, 1915. The March 20, 1915 issue. First Edition. Folio, stapled wraps, 199 pp. Covers have separated, having gently pulled through the hinges at some time, but otherwise a remarkably bright and clean copy, Near Fine if not for the separated covers. A very, very scarce late- late issue of the artful and humorous magazine better known in the late 1800s. This (1915) was the last year of the magazine prior to its sale to the William Randolph Hearst company in 1916, which continued publication thereafter only until 1918. Large but quite thin at 19 pages, this issue does show the sensibilities that made the magazine famous, from Lou Mayer's striking Irish St. Patrick's Day cover and internal illustrationw by Nell Hatt, Hy Mayer and a variety of other illustrators to, of course, the humor. A remarkable full-color, rear-cover Pierce-Arrow ad shows the barely inchoate style of Art Deco with a remnant of the art nouveau sensibility as well, in a single, very impactful (in my opinion) piece of imagery. See scans; please note that the folio size of this magazine required scanning the covers in two shots each. Among the very rarest of Puck issues. LG8.
