Egli concepì un'opera che può essere letta in una triplice prospettiva: quella teologica, che al suo centro ha il formidabile problema del popolo eletto che viene abbandonato dal suo Dio; quella politica, alla ricerca della retta via che riconducesse alla pace e all'unità l'impero, allora dilaniato dalle lotte fratricide seguite alla morte di Ludovico il Pio; quella personale, potente consolazione per chiunque si trovi in difficoltà e vigoroso impulso alla piena riconciliazione con Dio e con il mondo. Di quest'opera restano otto testimoni manoscritti e una serie di rielaborazioni, la più diffusa delle quali è un'epitome trasmessa da ventitré codici che circola sotto il nome di Girolamo con il titolo Expositio in Lamentationibus Hieremiae prophetae.
